Does anyone else remember the episode of Friends where Chandler’s coworker thinks his name is Toby?
Well, I’ve been thinking over the past few days about how important it is to be yourself. Throughout my life, it’s been way too easy to just go along with the crowd or be someone that I’m not. Everyone went through that teenage phase where they pretended to like something that they didn’t. (Remember Guster? I definitely pretended to like them and never heard a dang thing they played)
But even as an adult, I find that I try too hard to go along with what others want from me. I may not be the “fun mom” that still goes out with her friends all the time…but to be honest, I was never one to go out much anyway. Or I pretend to understand a reference to a news story, movie or television show that I don’t follow. Why don’t I just ask for explanation? I guess that teenage girl in me still wants to be accepted.
So anyway, from the bottom of my heart, I implore you to do what I’m going to do: just be me. I’m not going to feel guilty for choosing to spend quality time at home with my family in lieu of joining friends at a bar. I’m going to admit that I don’t know about a certain politician, and ask for further explanation. And when I disagree with something that someone says on a deep level, I’m going to be polite, but I’m not going to stay quiet.
In conclusion, be Chandler. Don’t be Toby. Unless you can be this Toby.
